About Aaron...

Our son Aaron Michael has been discharged from Basic Training in the Marine Corps, in San Diego, CA., due to a vision problem with one eye.  Though it is hard, things like this happen in life.  His first day was on August 10, 2010, while still 18 years old, and he turned 19 on August 21.  After processing, he will be returning home to begin the next phase of his life.

Aaron had been considering this decision for over a year, and when he decided to do this, he gave it his whole heart--working out, training physically and mentally, and participating with the local recruiter and new recruits in various ways.  In some ways this is a setback in his life, but provides opportunities as well.  In some ways this is a relief, though we share the pain with Aaron as some hopes and dreams are challenged with reality.

God bless you and be with you, precious son, and know that we love you, even though you cannot serve your country in the Marines!

OUR HOME

In 1997, with very little building experience, we began building a new home on part of a farm that Paul's family had owned.  We are stewards of about 37 acres, including roughly 22 acres of woods.  We moved into our new home in 1998, even though it was not fully finished, and we have been putting the 'finishing touches' on it ever since.  It is built out of I.C.E. blocks (insulated concrete forms made from Styrofoam, stacked and filled with concrete), and we included a number of other energy saving features as well.  We also have a pole barn workshop where we lived for nearly a year while we were building our house - with 4 kids, and no running water .  We have a wood-burning stove in the workshop and the house, to help keep down the costs of heating with the conventional LP furnace.

It is a joy to return to the country home we have built, any time we are away for even a day.

Our life includes a large garden, including asparagus, rhubarb, fruit trees, wild berries & nuts, beehives, and even hunting on our property.  We do a lot of old-fashioned home cooking and canning and food storage, which takes a lot of work, but which is also quite worth the effort.

OUR LIFE TOGETHER

Paul and Donna met on Maui, in Hawaii, where they both lived since 1983.  We met in church in 1985, became friends, grew to be good friends, and married in 1989.  Having both been married before, we received much counseling, and joined our families.  Paul had two children-Faith and Luke, and Donna had one-Jon, and we had had two children of our own-Aaron and Amy.  Add a son-in-law, Wade Albright (Faith's husband), and a grandson, Shawn, and his wonderful family Jeff & Donica Patchell, and Maddie and Darrin and McKenna -- quite a precious family.  Daughter-in-law Brooke (married Jon in 2008) is also a beautiful addition to our family.  And then there are grandparents, Jeri Corp (Donna's folks - Bill passed on in 2010) back in Philadelphia, Jack & Wunnie Fleuridas in N.J., and Elle in California.  Then there are the aunts, uncles, cousins, and those who have passed on from this life, whose memories bring much joy ............ well, on life goes.

WE HAVE SO MUCH FOR WHICH
WE ARE VERY THANKFUL TO GOD!
OUR PROPERTY

Our property was first 'settled' around 1829, roughly the time when New Salem of Abraham Lincoln fame was being settled northwest of Springfield, Illinois (about 40 miles from our farm).  The first owner of record was James P. Hampton, as noted on the property abstract that dates back to 1829!  What a fascinating piece of history.  On our property, there was a church and school (probably using the same building) by the early to mid-1840's.  It was called Bethel Church, and the cemetery was called Hampton (the original owner is buried here) Cemetery, and then Bethel Cemetery.  The church and the cemetery were used until the 1890's, when neighboring towns built up--the old country church and cemetery became abandoned.  The church was torn down some time after this, though the exact history is unsure.  We still find some bricks and other man-made artifacts occasionally in part of our garden, and in the nearby creek bed.  Our house is built not too far from the cemetery and the probable location of the old church building.
OUR FAITH

Our Christian faith is central to our lives together.  "WE LOVE BECAUSE HE (GOD) FIRST LOVED US,"  (quoted from I John 4:19) is as true now as when it was written nearly 2,000 years ago.  True believers in the Church are really and truly our family as well.  We have Church friends around the world, and with the connection that we have spiritually, new (to us) parts of our 'family' are discovered regularly as we meet new friends in the Church world.  Currently, we fellowship with believers in various fellowships, as well as socially from time to time.  We believe in the world-wide universal Church, which consists of true believers wherever they may be found, with no bounds or barriers that man can erect that are valid in the eyes of God.
